Chapter 17. Shipping > Setting Up a Shipping Account

Setting Up a Shipping Account

A lot of account setup and management can be done via the Web. Setting up an account is especially simple online. The larger shipping companies have downloadable software on their Web sites, and you can also apply for an account by filling out a simple form online. To use the shipping software, you must have an account number.

Federal Express and Airborne Express have a representative contact you by phone, and once your account is set up, you'll be billed weekly. All three major private couriers will schedule a daily pick-up driver for your business. UPS requires a small weekly fee, whereas Federal Express and Airborne do not add any extra charges for this request (though you do pay for it with a higher per unit shipping charge). If your office is located near any of these major couriers, you can drop off your own packages and avoid the pressure of having the items ready for the driver—and perhaps save a small amount of money.
