Part IV: Selling and Shipping > Electronic Software Distribution

Chapter 16. Electronic Software Distribution

Electronic Software Distribution (ESD) is an alternative to the traditional distribution of software and other digital goods. Rather than physically mailing any type of software (whether it be music, computer programs, clip-art or even a book), online retailers can save time and money while providing timely customer service by distributing that software directly to consumers electronically.

This chapter will take you through the steps, benefits, and potential pitfalls of ESD. Although this chapter is certainly more useful for those who sell products (such as software) that can be transferred over the Internet, other merchants may find some of the information interesting as well. You may not sell software currently, but you never know when you might decide to add, for example, a piece of software on bike repair and maintenance to your online bike store. Or maybe you'll distribute electronic music or a book as part of your overall product mix. If that day arrives, you might want to employ ESD-type technology to help you distribute data profitably and securely.
