Part IV: Selling and Shipping > Identifying and Preventing Crime

Chapter 15. Identifying and Preventing Crime

As the owner of a corner store has to deal with kids pocketing candy bars, so too will you be forced to confront potential thieves. Online thieves are different: Instead of sneaking out of your establishment with stuff in their pockets, these thieves will try to use stolen credit cards to purchase merchandise. Beyond that, though it's less likely, they might hack into your site and wreak havoc—the electronic version of graffiti or a brick through your window. They can cost you time and money unless you protect yourself against them.

Merchants lock up their shops when they leave for the day. Your online store will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, meaning you have to keep everything as secure as possible at all times. The shopping experience has become more secure and enjoyable for customers. And although increasing your customers' enjoyment must be your primary focus, you can do a number of things to make the lives of thieves and hackers miserable. That's what this chapter is about.
