Chapter 18. Maintaining Your Store > Organizing Your Site's Back End

Organizing Your Site's Back End

Using a good File Transfer Protocol (FTP) program allows you to keep your site organized by getting a visual representation of your file structure. Tronix uses a shareware program called CuteFTP. You can have your entire site in one main directory, but as your site grows you may want to separate specific files, such as graphics, into their own folders. Having separate folders eliminates the need to scan through dozens of files in search of the one file you need to update. You can keep all your HTML files in the main directory and all other file extensions out of sight.

When updating your files or adding new content, take note of any Web pages, screen shots, or other material to which you no longer link. Remov ing these unneeded files from the server will free up space and minimize clutter.
