Chapter 18. Maintaining Your Store

You're up and running. Flying, we hope. However, you can't just let your site sit there. Operating an online store involves daily tasks that are easily scheduled and a number of larger, less frequent tasks. And of course there are those time-swallowing emergencies that you might as well count on. You never know when an order will get lost, you'll get scammed by someone using a fraudulent credit card, or a power failure will knock you out of work for a couple of hours. The more prepared you are for Murphy's Law, the better off you'll be.

This chapter gives you some tips on how to organize your day so you're not trying to pack 40 boxes an hour before they have to be out the door. You'll also get some tips on how to best deal with waves of email, when to redesign your site, how to handle invoicing, and how to organize your site's back end. Hopefully you'll reach peak efficiency. But remember, Pedro Martinez still works on his fastball. No matter how efficient you think you are, you can always get better.
