Selecting a Name

Chances are, if you're going into business, you've been thinking about it for awhile. And if you've been thinking about it for awhile, you've mulled over some names. Although choosing a name can be one of the most fun, creative aspects of the setup, it shouldn't be taken lightly. Your name is how your business will be identified. For example, you probably don't want to call your store Overpriced Junk unless you're selling antiques to people with sharp senses of humor.

When deciding on a name for your business, think in the long term. This name will be plastered on the entrance to your Web site which, hopefully, thousands of Net travelers will visit daily. Make your business name easy to remember and short. "Rubbereyes!"(made famous by the old AT&T commercials) is better than "Ultraviolet Eye Shields Made of Flexible Material." Both names say roughly the same thing, but the first name is far easier to remember and more fun. And if your product is rubber sunglasses, fun is what you're selling. On the other hand, if you're selling surgical equipment, you might want to stay away from something like "Scalpels R Us." A serious product needs a serious name.
