Implementing Encryption

To properly implement encryption, you must accept orders on a server that is equipped for encryption. Many Web hosting companies have special servers to allow for secure order forms. Be sure to discuss with your hosting service how to place a form and script the right submission program to implement secure placement on the server.

If you don't use a hosting company, you must have the SSL and associated certificates on your own server. That requires getting an SSL-compliant server (most major servers are compliant) and applying to a certificate authority such as VeriSign or Nortel Entrust (see below for details) for the digital ID necessary for compliant browsers to register your site as valid. (If you use a Web hosting company, it should have digital ID for the server you use or technicians who can help you acquire a certificate of your own and install it.)
