Four important practices will help you prevent electronic crimes on your Web site. Follow basic Internet security practices; consult with either your ISP/Web hosting company or with a computer security expert about your site's security; utilize encryption whenever possible; and educate your customers about how they can protect themselves.

Following Basic Internet Security Practices

It is surprising how many Web site operators and Internet users fail to follow basic security practices. Some write down passwords on paper and hang them on the walls. Others repeatedly use the same simple password such as the name of a family member or a date of birth rather than choosing something unrelated to their personal life. Some hackers are even former employees who take advantage of easy-to-guess passwords.
