Forum and Community Types

Internet forums and communities form in a number of ways. Many work on the same basic premise—people post messages or participate in discussions that relate to a particular interest or topic. These messages are usually archived for others to see, and if they want they can join the conversation. Some communities may keep conversations going for days, weeks, even years. One community of computer book authors has been going strong for nearly four years. Some may keep permanant archives. Others, such as many Usenet newsgroups, may supply only the most recent week or so of messages. In general, the idea is for a community to form around participation in a large group discussion (usually accompanied by many different conversations and side messages).

There are four identifiable types of forums or communities found on the Internet:
