Fight, Fight, Fight!

Competition: it's the American Way. Running any business should be fun, but it should also provide you with a way to make a living. If you aren't ready to compete, fight, scratch, and claw for customers, you probably shouldn't be in sales. And if you are ready to go to battle, you should go with a plan. We hope this chapter has instilled a bit of fighting spirit and has also reinforced some ideas for forming your own battle plan.

In athletics, some coaches say they worry only about their team's preparation and don't concern themselves with the opposition. In business, this is a mistake. Yes, your first concern should be with providing the best service possible. But there's no harm in taking a peek at the competition. Any professional basketball coach who says he doesn't pay particularly close attention to Tim Duncan when preparing his team to play the San Antonio Spurs is either lying or stupid.
