Running Your Own Server

If you decide to ignore our advice and run your own server instead of using a hosting service, there are several packages to choose from. The most notable is OpenSite's Auction (www.opensite.com), a complete standalone auction software package. Auction is available in many flavors for those in need of anything from a basic auction server to one that allows them to host multiple auctions for other people. OpenSite is widely recognized as being the one auction package most tailored toward the small to medium auction store operator. It also has high-end enterprise auction software but, unlike some of its competitors, it has a complete line of software for midsize to lower-end stores that is a breeze to operate. Table 23.1 lists the major auction server software companies. However, because of its focus and strong reviews, this chapter will focus on OpenSite.

Tip

Microsoft's main commerce server, Site Server: Commerce Edition, features an optional auction module called the Auction Component, which lets you add online auction functionality to the Site Server system. The Auction Component enables sites to auction products, accept bids, and determine winners, using rules ranging from simple to sophisticated. Users can set reserve prices, minimum bids, start and end dates, bid increments, and resolve bid conflicts. The documentation for this optional downloadable add-on is available at: www.microsoft.com/siteserver/commerce/DeployAdmin/AuctionDoc.htm
