Auctioning via a Service vs. Running an Auction Store

Most people have been introduced to the idea of online auctions through eBay (Figure 23.1)—or through other online auction sites such as Yahoo Auctions or Boxlot.com. However, although these sites allow you to list an item for auction, they do not allow you to open a store. As we stated in Chapter 1, selling an item on the Web is not the same as operating a store. With auctions, it is very easy to list an item on eBay and hope people buy it. Many stores—especially those that sell antiques or collectible items—operate on eBay and other auction sites. However, they are only selling items individually and do not exist as an entire site with their own policies and other information.
