Commentary on the Road Ahead

This chapter has attempted to view the future in regard to six factors, each considered central to e-commerce and strategy formulation: technology, branding, service, market, government, and external relationship changes. The future is never known, of course, but it is a vision of the future to which the brave and the curious will be drawn and who will create the new and the dynamic organizational forms in the next stage of the online revolution.

As we have discussed in this book, no organization is immune to the contact and presence of the Internet and the technology that surrounds it. Those organizations that are successful going forward will be those who manage to balance their strategy in all of its areas; those organizations that are very successful will be those that manage not only to live within the waves of change but to influence them.
