Chapter 1. Formulating an Internet Strat... > The Internet as a Business Solution ...

The Internet as a Business Solution or Pandora's Box

If you ask investors what most defined Wall Street and investment markets in the late 1990s, only one issue will be raised—technology, or, more specifically, the Internet. It appeared that all you had to do was put ".com" on the end of your name and your stock price went up 10% or 20% or more. Since its deregulation as a data transmission media in the mid-1990s, the Internet has changed all the rules of business and, to a large extent, the lives of everyone on the planet, fundamentally changing the way we as humans can now interact. It has been a true inflection point in society, as important as the industrial revolution or the great socio-technical changes of the past, such as the discovery of DNA sequences by Crick and Watson, developments in particle physics by Einstein, or the breakthrough in celestial thinking by Copernicus.

Louis Gerstner, Chairman and CEO of IBM

Every day it becomes clearer that the Net is taking its place alongside the other great transformational technologies that first challenged, and then fundamentally changed, the way things are done in the world.
