Site-Building Exercise: Preparing the Beechwood Animal Shelter Comp for Construction

In the last chapter, you saw how the comp for the fictional Beechwood Animal Shelter site was transformed from a design that couldn’t be made liquid or elastic to a flexible-friendly design. It’s now time to make the slices from the revised comp that you’ll use in later chapters as images in the pages.

You’ll work with the exercise files from this book’s companion web site at www.flexiblewebbook.com. Download and unzip the file ch3_exercise.zip. The comp file inside the zip is named comp.png and is an Adobe Fireworks file, compatible with versions CS3 and later. If you don’t have one of these versions of Fireworks, you won’t be able to work directly with the file. However, the choices we’ll make—concerning what should be resized and how to slice—apply to the comp regardless of what program it was made or edited in, so follow along with the steps to learn how to prepare a real-world comp for construction.
