Chapter 8. Working with Text and Links > Indenting the First Text Line

Indenting the First Text Line

In HTML, vertical spacing is automatically inserted above and below text paragraphs to indicate paragraph breaks (or hard returns). Some organizations, however, have style conventions for their documents that require the use of text indents (or tabbed indents) to indicate the beginning of a new paragraph. A text indent indents the first line a specified distance from the element's left margin. Web designers might be compelled by the internal style czars within their organizations to enforce this rule in Web documents as well, even though this is largely a vestige of the typewriter era.

✓ Sometimes being able to easily set text indents can be very handy—when displaying paragraphs in columns, for instance, where you want to economize on the amount of vertical spacing occupied by the text. Later in this book, “Creating Multi-Column Layouts,” p. 337 (chapter 14), you use text indents to create a layout using newspaper columns.
