Chapter 4. Using CSS with HTML > A Word About Frames

A Word About Frames

While frameset elements have not been deprecated in HTML 4, one of the goals of CSS is to enable the layout of framed pages without the use of any frameset elements or attributes. In HTML, the term frameset element refers to any element used to implement frames within a Web page (including the FRAMESET, FRAME, and other elements). The “strict” definitions for HTML 4 and XHTML 1, however, disallow the use of both deprecated and frameset elements and attributes. See the following section, “The Three Flavors of HTML,” for information on the strict, transitional, and frameset definitions for HTML.
