Kinds of HTML Tags

Not all CSS definitions can be applied to all HTML tags. Whether a particular CSS property can apply depends on the nature of the tag. For the most part, whether a property can be applied to a particular tag (or not) is fairly obvious.

You wouldn't expect the text-indent property, which indents the first line of a paragraph, to apply to an inline tag such as bold, for example. When you do need some help in this area, Appendix B tells you which properties can be used with a particular kind of HTML tag.
