Part 2: Part 2: Dynamic HTML > Netscape Layers

Chapter 16. Netscape Layers

Netscape layers are a way to create independent objects in the browser window—objects that can be positioned, repositioned, shown or hidden, and stacked at will. They sound a lot like CSS layers, don't they? Netscape layers and CSS layers do basically the same thing but are set up differently. In fact, a Netscape layer is just another object on the screen created with a slightly different method (see "Creating an Object" in Chapter 11).

The biggest difference is that Netscape layers are supported by only one browser: Netscape 4. Although Netscape the company promised to continue to support layers in future iterations of its browser, this turned out not to be the case; Netscape 6 (Netscape 4's successor) has no support for Netscape layers.

Still, layers are used in Netscape 4 and have to be used for certain cross-browser DHTML solutions in conjunction with Internet Explorer-specific technologies.

In this chapter, I'll show you how to use the <layer> and <ilayer> tags, as well as how to add external content and change that content on demand.
