Part 2: Part 2: Dynamic HTML > Learning About Your Environment

Chapter 12. Learning About Your Environment

"To change your world, you must first know yourself." I don't know whether this is an ancient proverb or whether I just made it up, but it definitely applies to DHTML. Many of the functions in the chapters that follow this one rely on knowing where something is, how big it is, and what it is doing.

The first half of this chapter deals with things that you can learn directly from the browser itself—things such as the screen size and browser-window size—and these things do not use the DOM. The second half of the chapter looks at things you can learn from the objects you will be changing—things such as position, height, and width—and these things do use the DOM.
