Part 2: Part 2: Dynamic HTML > Understanding DHTML

Chapter 10. Understanding DHTML

As powerful as cascading style sheets are, they aren't really dynamic per se. They give you control of how a document looks when it is first put on the screen, but what about after that?

Web pages created with CSS can have their properties changed on the fly (that is, dynamically) through a scripting language such JavaScript.

The bad news (you knew it couldn't be that easy!) is that Netscape and Internet Explorer have implemented their own dynamic capabilities, which result in cross-browser incompatibilities. The good news is that there is still a lot of overlap between the two, and this is where dynamic HTML, or DHTML, offers advantages.

In this chapter, I'll introduce what makes DHTML dynamic.
