Chapter 6. Color and Background Controls

HTML has allowed us to set background colors and graphics almost since its beginnings. This capability, however, was limited to the background of the entire Web page. You could play around with the background colors of table cells, but that was still very confining.

CSS lets you define the background color and graphic for any individual element on the page, giving you much greater versatility when it comes to designing your Web pages. In fact, this may be the most significant advancement that CSS offers.
