Detecting the Browser's Name and Version

Although feature sensing is better for determining what a browser can and cannot do (see "Using Feature Sensing" in Chapter 11), sometimes you need to be able to tell your code what to do based on the browser type and browser version in which the Web page is running (Figures 12.1, 12.2, and 12.3).

Figure 12.1. The code is being run in Internet Explorer 5.5 on a Windows machine. Notice that the browser's designation includes (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows 95). It will show up, however, as being Internet Explorer 4 so that it can run older JavaScript code.
