Chapter 25. Controls > Creating Your Own Scroll Bars

Creating Your Own Scroll Bars

Without scroll bars, a GUI (graphical user interface) would be about as useful as a car without a steering wheel. Scroll bars allow you to place an infinite amount of information in a finite space and move that information around as needed. Because the computer's operating system defines the look and feel of the scroll bars, however, they often limit the design of Web interfaces.

In "Scrolling a Web Page" in Chapter 13, I showed you how to force a page to scroll. You can also use DHTML to scroll an individual layer in a window or frame (Figures 25.1 and 25.2).
