Chapter 17. Visual Effects > overflow-x and overflow-y Properties

17.2. overflow-x and overflow-y Properties

Specific to Internet Explorer 5.x and up, the overflow-x and overflow-y properties work in the same way as overflow, but for a specific direction. overflow-x is meant for content that might overflow horizontally, and overflow-y is for content that might overflow vertically.

Each can use any one of four common values: visible, scroll, hidden and auto. These are the same values shared by the overflow property, and they work in exactly the same way: the default visible value does not attempt to clip the content, scroll adds scrollbars, hidden clips the image and auto adds scrollbars only if they are needed.
