Chapter 10. Text Properties > text-overflow-ellipsis Property

10.24. text-overflow-ellipsis Property

The text-overflow-ellipsis property controls the type of “hint” character that is displayed when text overflows its line and its behavior is constrained by the overflow property from simply flowing to the next line. This property is designed to work in conjunction with text-overflow-mode: text-overflow-mode sets where the hint character should appear, and text-overflow-ellipsis controls what should appear.

text-overflow-ellipsis has three unique values, each of which can take strings of text to help define what is displayed: ellipsis-end, ellipsis-after and a URL value. The ellipsis-end value allows you to set a specific string or character as the “hint” character within the line of text that has overflowed. ellipsis-after does the same, but instead of placing the text or character at the end of a line of text, it is instead placed after (that is, outside of) the text flow. The URL value allows you to point to an image file containing whatever you want to use as a hint character. text-overflow-ellipsis can also take the initial and inherit values. The initial value is equivalent to the default, which in this case is ellipsis-end, and displays a typical ellipsis character (“”). inherit takes on any available parent value for this property.
