Chapter 10. Text Properties > white-space Property

10.22. white-space Property

The white-space property is a shortcut property at the head of the sub-family of properties controlling embedded white-space characters. As a shortcut property, it is a bit of an oddball, as its values actually set a bunch of relational values for its sub-properties; in effect, you get several values set at once. This makes sense, since some of the effects of specific values for some of the properties in this sub-family could easily conflict with each other — that is, trying to retain all spacing characters using all-space-treatment: preserve while white-space-treatment: ignore is set will make for a very confused browser.

It takes seven properties: normal, pre, nowrap, pre-wrap, and pre-lines, as well as initial and inherit. The following table shows the meaning of each value, corresponding to the equivalent set of values for its sub-properties.
