Chapter 10. Text Properties > white-space-treatment Property

10.20. white-space-treatment Property

The white-space-treatment property falls into the same sub-family as wrap-option, linefeed-treatment, all-space-treatment and white-space, each dealing with embedded space- or line-formatting characters. The white-space-treatment property works with embedded space characters (U+0020) along with any other white-space characters, with the exception of linefeeds.

It has seven values, ignore, preserve, ignore-if-before-linefeed, ignore-if-after-linefeed, and ignore-if-surrounding-linefeed, plus initial and inherit. The ignore value transforms white-space characters into no character at all. The preserve value retains the effects of the white spaces, extending the spaces between words or characters. The ignore-if-before-linefeed discards any spacing characters appearing immediately before a linefeed character, and the ignore-if-after-linefeed character does the same for any white spaces that appear after a linefeed. The ignore-if-surrounding-linefeed value is the default value, eliminating any spacing characters appearing either immediately before or after a linefeed character. The initial value is equal to the default value for the property, and inherit takes on whatever parent value that may be available for this property.
