Chapter 23. Multi-Column Layout > column-space-distribution Property

23.6. column-space-distribution Property

If you end up using the strict value for column-width-policy, it is likely that in most cases the total columnar space will be smaller than the available browser window width. In that case, you can use the additional column-space-distribution property to tell the browser what to do with that remaining, leftover space.

The column-space-distribution property can take any of six values: start, end, inner, outer, between and inherit. The start value places the space prior to the initial column, and the end value places the leftover space to the right of the final column. The inner and outer values are to be used only in a printable setting (i.e., with odd and even page settings), and set the spacing to the side closest and furthest from the binding area, respectively. The between value distributes any leftover space equally between the column sides, and the inherit value takes on whatever parent value may already be in place. Figure 23-3 shows how these values will be displayed against a sample strict three column layout that has some leftover space.
