8.7. color-index Media Query

Like the color property, color-index applies to all visual media types, and it can also take the min- and max- prefixes. This media feature describes the number of color entries in the lookup table of the target device — in other words, the total number of colors a device can simultaneously display. The ranges you will typically run across are 16 colors, 256 colors, 65,536 colors and 16,777,215 colors, corresponding to 4-bit, 8-bit, 16-bit and 24-bit color depths, respectively.

The following code snippet shows a color-index media query set to a minimum of 65,536 colors:
