Chapter 8. Media Types and Media Queries > device-aspect-ratio Media Query

8.5. device-aspect-ratio Media Query

The device-aspect-ratio property applies only to bitmap media types, and takes two numerical values separated by a “/” that describe the aspect ratio of the display. It can also accept the min- and max- prefixes.

While not limited to television or projection displays, most aspect ratios you will run across reference these technologies — you do not typically see print sizes referenced by their aspect ratio, for example. Standard television displays use a 4:3 aspect ratio (which is relatively square), and widescreen HDTV uses a 16:9 aspect ratio (which is significantly wider than it is tall). This way of determining the relative screen size of a device is a convenient shortcut for a wide range of devices; for example, while NTSC and PAL (the broadcast standards for North America and Europe, respectively) television screens have different equivalent pixel values, they share the same 4:3 aspect ratio.
