8.11. grid Media Query

The grid media feature has a simple purpose: it queries whether or not the display device is grid- or bitmap-based. It applies to all media types and does not accept min- or max- prefixes. This property seeks out grid-based displays, such as a tty terminal, or a phone display using only a single fixed font. A value of 1 is a positive match. A value of 0 matches any non-grid type of display.

The “em” unit of measurement takes on special significance with grid-based displays, since a value of 1 em is commonly understood to be the width of one grid cell horizontally and the height of one grid cell vertically, so it makes for an ideal unit of measure for use with this media query.
