Chapter 6. CSS Units > Length Units

6.1. Length Units

One of the chief benefits of CSS to Webmasters is the fact that you can finally tune borders, font sizes and margins using exact units of length. There are eight standard units of measure available, ranging from simple, common units of length to typographic measurement units, all of which can be used with CSS properties: inches, millimeters, centimeters, picas, points, pixels, m-lengths and x-heights. All of these units of measure can be specified by using a two-letter short form:

  • inches = in

  • millimeters = mm

  • centimeters = cm

  • pica = pc

  • point = pt

  • pixels = px

  • m-length = em, and

  • x-height = ex.
