Chapter 15. Classification Properties an... > list-style-image Property

15.3. list-style-image Property

Along with the list-style-type, list-style-position and list-style, liststyle-image is designed to alter the way the list marker at the beginning of a list element appears. The idea behind list-style-image is that sometimes you may want something other than a standard, plain old list marker to appear in front of each element in a list. If you want to put a colorful 3D button, a picture of the Mona Lisa or any other image in front of a list item, list-style-type is the property for you.

list-style-type has two possible values: none and a URL that links to the desired image. none is the default value, and, not surprisingly, it doesn't add a picture before a list element (it appears as a regular list item). By adding a URL value that links to an image, that image can become the “list marker” at the beginning of the list. The URL must be specified in the CSS manner (see the URL section in Chapter 6, “CSS Units” for more detailed information on specifying URLs in CSS).
