ColdFusion Variable Scope

The variables you create with <cfset> are called local variables. They are local in the sense that they exist only while the script they're defined in is running. When that script finishes and the resulting HTML page is delivered to the requesting browser, the local variables are cleared out of memory so that ColdFusion has all its resources available to process the next request.

In addition to the local variables, ColdFusion maintains several other variable collections in memory. These collections are called variable scopes, and you distinguish one scope from another by use of a prefix. The available prefixes include the following:
