Chapter 2. Variables and Variable Scope

Chapter 2. Variables and Variable Scope

One of the most basic yet useful features of the ColdFusion development language is the ability to store information in memory for later use. The memory areas that hold the information are called variables, and ColdFusion supports the creation of many kinds. ColdFusion also allows you to store many different kinds of data in variables, including text, numbers, dates, times, and Boolean (TRUE or FALSE) values. These different kinds of data are called data types.

In this chapter, you will

  • Learn how to create your own variables

  • Learn how ColdFusion assigns data types and how you can check a variable's data type

  • See how to retrieve a value stored in a variable and incorporate it into a Web page

  • Learn about ColdFusion variable scopes and how ColdFusion searches through the different scopes
