Chapter 8. Sending E-mail with ColdFusion

Chapter 8. Sending E-mail with ColdFusion

If you've ever ordered something online, you very likely received an e-mail message shortly thereafter thanking you for your order and confirming the items in the order. You also may have received a follow-up message telling you when your order was shipped. Web sites commonly use e-mail to communicate with their users to let them know about new content, improved features, enhanced product offerings, or anything else that might bring the users back to the site for another visit.

You also may be a member of a mailing list or listserv in which you send messages to a particular e-mail address and your message is, in turn, forwarded to all members of the list. This process could be performed manually, but that would require someone watching the incoming mail 24 hours a day and forwarding each message that comes in. Instead, it would be much more efficient to have a computer check the mailbox periodically and automatically forward to the list membership any messages that are there.
