Chapter 11. Maintaining State Information > Using ColdFusion Session Variables

Using ColdFusion Session Variables

A third approach to managing state information is to have ColdFusion store the information on the server itself. ColdFusion's session management feature enables it to store state information in RAM and to keep each piece of state information mapped to the user that it applies to. When you store data in this way, you are creating ColdFusion session variables. Session variables are accessible through the ColdFusion Session variable scope.

NOTE

To be able to use session variables, you must activate ColdFusion's session management feature by using the <cfapplication> tag in an application.cfm file. To learn more information about how to create an application.cfm file for your application, see Chapter 12, “Using the ColdFusion Application Framework.”
