What's Next

This chapter illustrated how to use <cfquery> together with the SQL SELECT statement to retrieve data stored in a relational database. You learned how to use the retrieved data to build different HTML constructs such as bulleted lists, tables, and drop-down lists in forms. You also learned how to build search interfaces that enable users to perform their own database queries.

This chapter focused specifically on SQL SELECT statements and how to handle the data they retrieve. You also can use three other major kinds of SQL statements: INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE. INSERT enables you to add a new record to a database, usually with data collected by an HTML form. UPDATE lets you set up an edit function for existing records in the database, and DELETE lets you remove records from the database. The next chapter will show you how to use each of these queries in your ColdFusion applications.
