Part I: The Fundamentals of ColdFusion D... > Introducing Dreamweaver MX and ColdF...

Chapter 1. Introducing Dreamweaver MX and ColdFusion MX

This book teaches you how to develope ColdFusion MX applications with Dreamweaver MX. ColdFusion is an application server. Application servers process user input, query databases, and generate results to a web browser. Application servers lie at the heart of database-driven web applications, such as content management systems, online shopping, and user registration.

Dreamweaver offers an award-winning visual development environment that lets you click buttons and drop and drag to create dynamic, interactive web pages. Using Dreamweaver’s features specifically designed for ColdFusion, you can build sophisticated web applications that leverage emerging technologies, such as XML and web services.

Although the excitement of the Internet gold rush is over, thousands of web developers are working harder than ever to make web sites better and more useful. Application servers and visual design environments have become the norm. In fact, while the dotcom business model—or lack of a business model—proved fatally flawed, the technologies that made the web popular continued to make great strides in both power and ease of use.

Today, ColdFusion MX and Dreamweaver MX represent the best in modern web application development. To appreciate just how far web development has come, a little history is in order.
