Chapter 16. Sessions and the Application... > Using the Application.cfm File

Using the Application.cfm File

This section will explain how to create an Application.cfm file and how to define application options in it. Any discussion of ColdFusion persistent variable scopes should begin with the Application.cfm file. This file can be used to specify settings for the application, not the least of which are those for Client, Application, and Session variable management.

The Application.cfm page is a special ColdFusion page that is automatically loaded once for each CFML file in the same directory in which it is processed. This makes its settings available throughout the application. A single Application.cfm page can be used for an entire application, including files in subdirectories, or you can create a separate Application.cfm page for each subdirectory. This gives you some flexibility in that you can put separate applications in a subdirectory and give them unique Application.cfm settings, or have one big complex application spread out into several subdirectories. The choice is dependent on your particular application needs.
