ColdFusion Development: What Do I Need?

To run any software, you need an operating system. If you want to run Dreamweaver and ColdFusion on the same system, your only choice is Windows. If you can run Dreamweaver on one computer and ColdFusion on another, you have a few more options. For example, ColdFusion supports a number of Linux and Unix distributions in addition to Windows. So, if you run Dreamweaver on a Macintosh and ColdFusion on a Linux or Unix-based server, you can develop ColdFusion applications in a completely non-Windows environment.

As will be explained in Chapter 2, “Introducing ColdFusion MX,” you need a web server to serve HTML pages over the web. For development purposes, ColdFusion MX includes its own HTTP web server. This proves very convenient for development purposes if you do not already have a web server installed on your system. For deployment purposes, you will want to use another web server, such as Internet Information Services (IIS) (http://www.microsoft.com) or the Apache Web Server (http://www.apache.org).
