A Short History of the Web

If you’re reading a book on dynamic web development, you’ve probably been surfing around the Internet for years. If you can remember the very early days of the World Wide Web, you likely remember the novelty of reading web sites from around the world and sending text emails to friends. For many, exchanging information over a computer quickly became as natural as picking up a telephone.

Like many grassroot movements, an exact date and place for the birth of the Internet is hard to pinpoint. In 1969, an early prototype of a distributed network named ARPANET was set up between a small cluster of universities around the United States. Within just a few years, the fledgling Internet was already demonstrating its capability to grow quickly with the rapid addition of campuses from around the world.
