Understanding CFML

ColdFusion pages contain HTML, just like any other web page. When ColdFusion processes the page, it looks for CFML tags—such as CFQUERY or CFOUTPUT—to process, not HTML tags. However, HTML can be enclosed in ColdFusion tags so that the HTML is repeated or modified in some way. In addition, ColdFusion looks for values enclosed in hash signs (#…#) that signify a ColdFusion variable.

This flexibility lets you use your existing HTML skills to build a web page and just insert ColdFusion tags where you want dynamic content to appear. As the following example shows, you can build on your knowledge of HTML to learn CFML:
