Chapter 2. Introducing ColdFusion MX > Understanding ColdFusion

Understanding ColdFusion

ColdFusion is an application server that processes ColdFusion pages or components. ColdFusion pages (*.cfm) typically contain HTML, just like a regular web page, but they also contain ColdFusion tags or CFScript that provides database operations, conditional logic, and so on.

Nondynamic web sites consist of a collection of HTML pages, which might also contain graphics, multimedia, and Java applets. The web server, such as Microsoft’s Internet Information Services (IIS) and the Apache Web Server (http://www.apache.org), provides the pages to web browsers. Figure 2.1 shows how a web site works without an application server.
