Part VII: Customizing Dreamweaver > Building Dreamweaver Extensions

Chapter 24. Building Dreamweaver Extensions

In this chapter, you will learn the basics of building Dreamweaver extensions. Dreamweaver extensions let you build custom dialogs, server behaviors, server models, menus, and more. Using the Dreamweaver extension application programming interfaces (APIs), you can build sophisticated user interfaces and dynamic functionality. You can also package your extension and make it available for download by other Dreamweaver users.

Dreamweaver extensions exist as a collection of files that are installed in Dreamweaver. Extensions can change the way Dreamweaver works by modifying the environment or functionality. More often, Dreamweaver extensions add features that are not included “out of the box.”

Although this chapter does not teach you how to build an extension step by step, you can learn the general concepts and technologies used in building Dreamweaver extensions. For an in-depth discussion of building Dreamweaver extensions, see the Dreamweaver MX Extensions by Laura Gutman (New Riders Publishing, 2002).
