Chapter 18. Building a Search Interface


As a web site grows, it becomes more and more important for users to be able to find the information that they are looking for. It also becomes more difficult. This chapter will show you how to build a search interface for a web site using ColdFusion.

When you create a search page to find information on a web site, you first have to index the site to make it more efficient to search. It would be far too time consuming and use too much of the server processing resources to go through each page. The usual solution is to create a collection containing all of the information that you want to search, and to build an index of the values in the collection. This speeds up the search a great deal because the search engine now only needs to look through the index and present the user links to the pages containing the information.

ColdFusion has several features that make building search pages easier. This chapter will teach you how to build search page collections both programmatically and by using the ColdFusion Administrator, as well as how to build a search interface programmatically using CFML.
