Part V: Common ColdFusion Programming Techniques > Building User Authentication

Chapter 17. Building User Authentication

Whether you are building an e-commerce application, a web site for a software company that provides software downloads, or even a hobbyist message board, you need user authentication. Many web applications need to keep track of visitors or provide areas that are accessible by registered members only. Authentication can also be valuable in securing vital data from hackers.

When you use ColdFusion MX to build your application, user authentication features are provided automatically. All you have to do is add them to your application.

ColdFusion would be an excellent environment for building user-authenticated applications even without the custom tags it provides for this purpose, simply due to its database-driven nature. However, ColdFusion MX provides a security framework that makes authentication even easier.

This chapter consists of the following sections:

  • An introduction to ColdFusion user security

  • Using Dreamweaver’s User Authentication server behaviors

  • Using user authentication in an application
