Chapter 16. Sessions and the Application Variable Scope

In standalone application development, when you creat a variable, it is usually available for as long as you need it, safely stored in memory. Web applications, on the other hand, are different. The web is stateless by nature, which means that each request made to a web server isn’t necessarily related to or followed by any other request. For this reason, server applications need to be a little smarter when it comes to managing the client state.

ColdFusion MX provides several different levels of persistent variables to help with this, including Session variables (those unique to an individual session) and Application variables (those that are global across all application sessions). Figure 16.1 shows the scope of both of these persistent variable types. Persistent variables are those that are maintained across multiple page requests by some means, and are either returned to the server with each request or live on the server in memory.
