Summary

Like many readily available CGI scripts, ColdFusion lets you process and send mail at the server level. But unlike those basic scripts, it also enables you to use mail features in conjunction with database selection and input, making it a very powerful mail tool that doesn't require nearly as much coding know-how as a custom CGI script.

To handle incoming mail, developers use a special tag called <CFMAIL>. It works by sending mail to a SMTP server, defined either in the tag itself or in ColdFusion Administrator. <CFMAIL> accepts parameters that enable you to specify who the mail is from and to whom it's going, and gives you the ability to send plain text, HTML-enhanced message bodies, or MIME-encoded attachments. You can supply any of <CFMAIL>'s parameters dynamically, making it a great tool to automate mailing lists or provide instant feedback from the Web.
